The Just Transition Commissioner believes the success of the plan to help communities move away from peat production will lie at the feet of County Councils in the region.

Next Friday marks the closing date for stage one applications to apply for some of the €11m fund set aside for projects in communities across the midlands.

Registering projects through the Engagement Process is the first stage with hopes that more funding will be made available for projects later this year.

The Department of the Taoiseach is to become the agency which will examine the progress made on Just Transition but Roscommon native Kieran Mulvey, speaking at an Irish Rural Link webinar this week, believes the success or failure of the project will be determined by local authorities
