Just a quarter of June's local election candidates are women. 54 local council seats are up for grabs in next months election in the Shannonside Region.

109 candidates and sitting councillors are in the running for those seats with a number of long standing representatives standing down from the race this year. Of the 109 candidates locally just 28 are women in the region.

Longford and Roscommon both have a candidate pool of 37 with both Council's featuring a number of empty seats come June. Leitrim has 35 candidates seeking election, with several long standing Councillors also not contesting this time around.
