Irish State officially founded this day 100 years ago

Today is the centenary of the foundation of the State.

The Irish Free State officially came into being following the ratification of an Irish constitution on the 5th of December 1922.

However, Ireland would remain embroiled in civil war for another fives months, and remain a dominion of the British Empire until 1931.

Ireland would be officially known as the Irish Free State until the new constitution was introduced in 1937.
