Ireland West Airport in Knock is welcoming funding of €6 million euro announced yesterday for regional airports, and a new national airport charges rebate scheme for the first three months of next year.
A statement issued this morning says the airport is expecting to have lost close to €4 million this year as a result of the collapse of passenger traffic, from 807,000 last year to around 145,000 this year.
The airport had to close its doors for three months at the beginning of the pandemic and is facing into a second four week closure from this weekend.
Head of Marketing at Ireland West, Donal Healy, says the introduction of the EU traffic light system, coupled with the extra funding and the rebate scheme are all positive signs after a year of serious challenges.
