Intense Covid-19 contract tracing is continuing in Athlone region

Intense contract tracing is still ongoing in the Athlone region following cases Covid-19 linked to the delta strain of the virus.

Public health teams are currently following up all contacts of those associated with the outbreak.

Over eight-hundred people were tested for Covid-19 at a pop up centre in Athlone last week after concerns that the delta variant was spreading in the midlands following social gatherings.

According to the HSE's Chief Clinical Officer, Dr Colm Henry, intensive contact tracing can help identify potential secondary outbreaks of the more transmissible strain before they spread.
