Inquest hears hydraulic failure on tractor led to Longford farmer's death

The plough that Mr. Harte was working on collapsed onto him due to a fault in the tractor's hydraulic system.

An inquest into the tragic death of a well-known Longford farmer has ruled it as accidental.

John Harte from Aughnavalley, Colehill in County Longford lost his life in a farming accident in May 2020.

The Longford man was killed at his home when a hydraulic fault in a tractor resulted in the plough he was repairing collapsing onto him.

Following an inquest this week, Longford County Coroner Dr Niall Donohoe ruled the tragedy as an accidental death due to crush injuries.

The popular farmer and agricultural contractor was well known in plowing and vintage car circles across the region.

Speaking after the verdict, the Coroner, Gardaí and Health and Safety Authority expressed their condolences to the Harte family.
