Over five-hundred additional people have joined the live register of unemployment in the Shannonside region since February.

According to new figures from the CSO, Roscommon and Leitrim both saw their unemployment queues increase in May.

Last month Leitrim recorded an increase of nineteen people claiming some form of social welfare, bringing its total to 1761, which is over 150 additional people on the list since February.

County Roscommon's total for May increased by twelve, despite a drop of sixteen in Castlerea, which was balanced out by an increase of twenty three in Roscommon town itself.

Overall the county's unemployment total is at 2,194, a rise of 166 since February.

Longford's live register figure was down by seven in May - bringing the county's unemployment total to 2529 - which is still 185 people more than it was in February.

Athlone and Mullingar also recorded increases in their live reg figures for May - increasing by 35 and 24 respectively.
