The head of the HSE has urged people in Castlerea to see the development of a multi-million euro E-mental health hub in the town as "the dawning of a new beginning".
The facility is based at the site of the former Rosalie nursing home for older people with dementia and Alzheimers.
A five year long battle to retain the facility came to an end last December when the final two residents were moved out of the home to other units in the region.
Paul Reid and Minister for Mental health Jim Daly were in Castlerea on Monday to officially open the new unit which will incorporate a special CAMHS service as well as day hospital and older person mental health day facility
He acknowledged that while the centre has had a difficult past, he is encouraging people now to look to the future.
