Eir has informed the Department of Communications that all residents within the one kilometer of its exchanges have speeds of 30 MBps

Shannonside residents who are living within one kilometer of an Eircom exchange are being urged to check their broadband speeds.

The National Broadband Plan will only connect houses that have speeds less than 30 mega byts per second.

Eir has informed the Department of Communications that all residents within the one kilometer catchment have that base level.

However it's emerged that in many areas including Ahascragh in east Galway, and areas in Ballinasloe and into Roscommon have not the standard speed.

The issue was raised by Roscommon Galway TD Denis Naughten at an Oireachtas Committee attended by senior officials from the Department today.

He says people need to check their speeds and if the information on the Broadband Plan is inaccurate, contact the Department directly.
