Hopes Longford Greyhound track purchase will boost local tourism

The vacant land attracted some controversy over the last year with fears expressed that the site could be used for commercial development.

The Cathaoirleach of Longford Council says she believes the right development of Longford Greyhound Track could pay huge tourism dividends for the county town.

Fine Gael councillor Peggy Nolan told members at the monthly meeting of the council yesterday that a deal to buy the 7 acre greyhound track site is at an advanced stage.

The area is zoned for sporting and recreational use and Councillor Nolan says she believes it could provide a vital link for canal greenway users to the town itself.

Councillor Nolan says that people coming from Dublin along the canal are not given a real link into Longford town, and she thinks a "mock harbour" and cycle trail, into and around the town, could remedy that:
