A HIQA report has praised the kind and caring nature of staff at a Roscommon nursing home but noted a lack of adequate staffing

The unannounced inspection at the Plunkett Community Nursing Unit was carried out in February of this year

The HSE run centre located in Boyle can accommodate 33 residents who require long-term residential care and two residents who require short term respite, convalescence, dementia or palliative care.

Bedroom accommodation consists of 15 single, and nine double rooms

At the time of the inspection, there were 31 residents present in the centre.

Inspectors spoke with residents who said this was a good place to live and that staff were supportive and kind.

Residents also informed the inspector they felt safe in the centre and that they could talk to any member of the staff team if they had a worry or a concern.

The report found rooms were well laid out, the centre was clean and well-maintained, and residents were complimentary about the food.

A number of non-compliances were found in relation to Persons in Charge, Staffing, and Training and Governance.

According to the report, the centre had failed to appoint a person in charge who met the requirements of regulations.

It also found that there were not enough care staff present in the morning to provide adequate care, pointing to a case of care staff being interupted which lead to some residents not receiving medication in time.

Some staff also had not completed refresher training in some areas.

The centre was substantially compliant or compliant in all other areas of inspection.

In the response section of the report, the HSE confirmed that all refresher training is now complete and recruitment is ongoing to address the staffing issues.
