HIQA inspectors have praised the efforts of staff at Sligo University Hospital in providing patient care.
An unannounced inspection was carried out at the hospital in June of last year
Sligo Hospital has a bed capacity of 342 incorporating 35 short stay beds at Our Lady's Hospital in Manorhamilton, Co.Leitrim.
The inspection of the facility took place over 2 days in June 2023.
Across all areas inspected, the hospital was found to be substantially compliant in 4 areas, partially compliant in 6 areas, and non-compliant in two areas.
One area of non compliance related to the dignity, privacy and autonomy of patients in the emergency department.
Inspectors observed staff being kind and caring to each patient, and it was clear they were aware of a need to respect each patients dignity.
However, the report stated that the accomodation of patients on trolleys in corridors negatively affected patients privacy and dignity.
Other areas of improvement noted were around identification of harm, with inspectors recommending an increase in hand hygiene compliance and timely preparation and sending of discharge letters.
While in another partially complaint area, inspectors noted a lack of isolation facilities leading to different cohorts of patients with different micro-organisms in multi-occupancy rooms.
In its conclusion, HIQA stated the hospital had submitted a compliance plan and will continue to monitor progress.
