The inspection took place last December and was unannounced.

A total of three non-compliances were recorded at a south Longford nursing home last year following a Hiqa inspection.

Thomond Lodge was found to be well run overall, but improvements were required in areas such as staffing and oversight of care and services.

A total of 46 residents were on the premises on the day of this unannounced inspection last December.

The inspector spoke with nine residents and one visitor who were very positive about the centre and described feeling ''happy'', ''well looked after'' and ''had no issues with anything at all''.

The centre's Covid-19 protocols were also described as being comprehensive.

The findings on the day of inspection were that, for the most part, the provider was delivering good quality clinical care to residents, in line with their assessed needs.

Out of 13 areas inspected, three were non-compliant, six were substantially compliant and four were compliant.

Hiqa claims the inspection found that the centre was well managed by an established management team but it warned further action was required to ensure that the oversight of care and services was effective.

Hiqa raised issues with staffing, where the report finds recruitment proved an issue and it was also claimed that areas of improvement were also required in regards to the "notification of incidents, the management of safeguarding incidents and the quality of care planning documentation."

The inspector also noted that the registered provider no longer acted as a pension agent for any residents'.

Responding to the report management confirmed they are hiring additional staff, and extra safeguarding training was being provided as well as more hygiene and infection control audits being carried out following HIQA recommendations.

In a statement to Shannonside FM, the centre says "it has been an extremely difficult two years, overcoming many challenges, Covid, staffing and restricted visiting."

They go on to state that the report highlight(s) "the excellent care compassion our residents receive from our very hardworking staff and "residents are now experiencing a more normal approach towards visiting and socialising within the community."
