The higher planning authority has upheld the grant of permission for a 30 metre high telecom mast in Roscommon.

Cignal Infrastructure Limited had applied to Roscommon County Council for the lattice tower at Skyvalley, Taughmacaonnel at the start of 2022.

The local authority had approved permission at the time with nine conditions attached.

That approval was appealed to An Bord Pleanála by locals and members of Wind Turbine Action Group South Roscommon.

They cited concerns over the location of the developer on an important aquifer and the possible effect on natural heritage in the area.

Locals also claimed signal coverage was already strong enough in the region and did not require further telecommunications infrastructure.

The appeal was refused however, and planning permission was upheld with revised conditions.

These include that the developer will facilitate an archaeological appraisal of the site.
