It's hoped upcoming funding from the Department of Rural Regeneration will help see the project come together.

Hopes are high for a major step forward in the construction of a Skate Park in Longford.

The campaign has been underway for a number of years, with local activists petitioning the County Council for help in providing the purpose built facility.

A number of sites were highlighted during discussions between the Longford Skate Park Committee and the local authority such as the former Connolly Barracks, The Mall and the recently purchased Longford Grey Hound Stadium.

Local councillor Peggy Nolan, who has campaigned heavily on the issue, says a site has been selected and funding from the Department of Rural Regeneration is expected in the coming months.

Speaking to Shannonside news, Councillor Nolan say they submitted a strong application for the grant, which itself specifically includes the provision of skating infrastructure in its terms.

Everybody is waking up to the fact that skate boarding is now an Olympic sport.

Almost every county in Ireland has a skate park and if they don't they will be looking to put one in place over the coming years.

As far as I'm concerned, we have a site totally supported by the council, a collective effort on the county council and Longford Municipal district.

Everybody working together to ensure the need is addressed and met.
