Backlogs in testing was one of the reasons contact tracing for students was shelved in September.

A health expert says contact tracing in schools should resume.

This comes as the number of Covid patients in hospital rose above 500 today for the first time since March.

Routine contact tracing was scrapped in primary schools at the end of September.

DCU professor of health systems Anthony Staines says children may be passing Covid infections to adults.

He says tracking cases in schools could help address this.
