A huge achievement.

The atmosphere at a Longford school is being described as ecstatic following the success of its students at the Junk Kouture final in the Middle East.

Joshua Osabuehien and Solomon Eduard representing Cnoc Mhuire in Granard scooped the overall world designer of the year title at the fashion event at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi last night.

The competition challenged young people to design, upcycle and create high end clothing items from recycled waste.

Their outfit 'Back to the Future' is described as a futuristic coat of armour against climate change made from an old laundry basket, car wipers, and an old shower mat.

The local students were crowned winners over 60 other schools from across the UK, USA, France, Italy and UAE.

Principal of Cnoc Mhuire Pauline McBrien says it's a huge achievement and the school is incredibly proud.

''I'd like to congratulate Solomon and Josh and their families on this Junk Kouture World Design of the Year awards on their teacher Charmaine Hetherton, exceptional achievement, it's rewarding their work, their talent and their skill, phenomenal success for Cnoc Mhuire,  the whole school community here and indeed for Granard town. Josh and Solomon are very quietly confident un-assuming young lads, both from Edgeworthstown, they fly back in the middle of the night tonight, and we hope that they might make it past the school tomorrow.''
