The Tromra estate in Granard has re-opened after a security alert this afternoon.

The Defence Forces Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit has removed a device from the garden of a home in the town after Gardai sealed off the area this morning.

Emergency services were alerted after Gardai were told a device, believed to be similar to a pipe bomb, was discovered in the area just after 11am.

The EOD unit, based at Custume Barracks in Athlone, arrived at the scene shortly after 1pm and deployed a special robot to assess the device.

The Defence Forces have now left the area with the device for further examination and the housing estate and the road has since re-opened.

Gardai in Granard are appealing for anyone with information or who may have seen anything suspicious in the area to contact them at 043-6686512.
