Government called on to provide hope to local marts by easing Covid restrictions

Marts have been conducting online sale sales for a number of months but there is no clear plan on when they can get back to normality

It's hoped that some easing of restrictions around marts may be considered by the government by the middle of next month.

Disappointment has been expressed by several farming groups that no change to the strict Covid rules at marts was mentioned or included in the plans unveiled by the Taoiseach on Tuesday evening.

Online sales of animals have been taking place for the last number of months - with some marts investing significant funds in order to be able to web stream the trade.

Leitrim Councillor Paddy O'Rourke says while farmers buying cattle has not been an issue - the selling might be more problematic unless rules are relaxed:
