The Government has asked the HSE for better data on the number of Covid cases in hospitals.

Ministers are also due to be updated this week on plans for the re-opening of schools in September.

The Government is looking for better data on hospitalisations with Covid to inform decisions about re-opening.

Some Ministers estimate at least 10 per cent of those in hospital with Covid are not in hospital because of Covid, and are not specifically sick due to the disease.

Professor of Health Systems at DCU Anthony Staines is skeptical of changing how cases are counted.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin though says Ministers are just looking for all the facts.

The Taoiseach has also said schools will return in September, despite concerns about the rising number of new Covid cases.

Head of teaching union the ASTI Ann Piggott says they hope schools will be back as planned.

Education Minister Norma Foley is expected to update the cabinet on plans tomorrow.
