Gardaí urge public to take pro-active measures to avoid thefts

Gardaí give a number of ways to avoid the theft of catalytic converters.

Local Gardaí are urging members of the public to take pro-active measures following a spate of criminal incidents in the region.

Thefts of catalytic converters and instances of distraction burglaries in rural areas have risen over the last number of months.

Catalytic converters control exhaust emissions and contain precious metals on the inside, which criminals harvest and sell.

Leitrim Gardaí are urging the public not to park their cars on kerbs, to park in a well lit area and to install a converter clamp if possible.

Meanwhile, reports of distraction burglaries are on the rise locally.

This method of breaking into houses involves a person calling to the front door to distract the occupant, while an accomplice enters through the back of the property and takes items of value.
