Local Gardaí are urging the public to remain calm and not spread false information following reports of an incident at a teenage disco in Roscommon last night.
Claims of an alleged incident of needle-spiking were spread on social media at the Jack's Teen Evolution Disco in Roscommon Town last night.
Gardaí were called to assist at the venue, and following enquiries and the examination of CCTV footage, were satisfied that no crime had taken place.
There were no injuries or hospitalisations reported, and organisers state that the speculations were generated by an internal source within the disco on social media.
In a statement to Shannonside FM this morning, the event organisers say the claims caused panic amongst attendees resulting in many trying to leave the venue at once.
They confirmed all children attending the disco are searched on entry, with the event resuming and finishing on schedule following the disturbance.
A statement from Walter Mellano, Event Security:

During the teen disco event, some kid has started to run a rumour on snapchat saying people were getting spiking into the venue, and straight after even worse somebody was stabbed!! Of course nothing of this was true, let’s say was a kid’s joke ???????. At this point the crowd got panic , starting to call parents and starting to push against the exit doors. There was a moment were 400 kids were trying to get out from the venue, therefore there was no other way for us to let them get out to avoid injuries from the pushing. Gardai were attempting the spot for more than an hour to make sure everybody outside were fine, our doors were open to let them get in back. The event had ended at 23:00 like usual.
No kid as left the venue in danger not injured. We search kids one by one at the entry and there is no way some drug or syringe would get into the venue. We all are always very aware to keep the crowd safe and sound.
