Contracts for the construction of the skate park were signed last week, with work expected to begin before year's end.

Plans are close to being approved for further community amenity works at the former Longford Greyhound track.

The site is currently being developed as a state of the art skate park, following the purchase of the track by Longford County Council last year.

Contracts were signed last week, with construction on the skating infrastructure set to be complete by the end of 2023.

Plans are currently being discussed for the construction of a specially adapted playground serving children with disabilities at the Park Road site.

Designs are also at an advance stage to link the end of the Canal Green way into the town itself, with Councillor Peggy Nolan saying the project will bring real economic benefit to the town.

Speaking following the signing of the contracts, Councillor Nolan says that these developments have been made possible by the inclusion of the public in the design process.

'This is going to have centre place and it will feed into the amenity we purchased the dog track for.

Also, almost at fruition is a play area for children with special needs and this play area is being designed in conjunction with the parents of those kids, so the users will have an input.

As well as that, we are well advanced in putting in a pathway that will bring people in off the canal green way into the town for the economic dividend.'
