The IFA is also calling on the Department to ensure farmers receive payment.

It's claimed at least 16,000 farmers looks set to lose out on funding because of a major mis-calculation by the Department of Agriculture.

Independent TD for Galway East Sean Canney says the Department budgeted for 30,000 applications as part of the Agri-Climate Rural Environment Scheme.

However 46,000 applications have been received so far meaning at least 16,000 will not receive grants.

Deputy Canney says the system as it currently stands is going to leave a lot of applicant farmers getting nothing from the scheme and is grossly unfair.

''This is something that the Minister and the Department of Agriculture have got to look at very very closely to make sure that every farmer who legitimately qualifies gets paid their money in 2023.''
