A fundraiser has been set up to assist with vet fees.

There are fears a dog rescued in Longford this week may have been used for ‘dog baiting’.

The practice involves setting a smaller animal as ‘practice’ for bigger dogs to attack who are then themselves used in illegal dog fighting events.

A dog with serious injuries was reported to the animal welfare charity ‘My Lovely Horse’ after it was spotted with serious injuries in an are of Longford in recent days.

Another Longford resident managed to entice the dog into a shed and secure it after the charity put up an appeal for people to watch out for the dog.

The small terrier-like dog was collected the following morning by the charity where it has since been treated by a vet.

Jenny Spring from ‘My Lovely Horse’ says all the evidence seems to point to the little dog being used for illegal fighting.

''Little Eoin's injuries, they're extensive. At first we didn't know if he had an eye removed, if the eye was kind of stuck into the back of his head and on closer inspection by our vet we can see that the eye is still there. There's a deep hole in his head that our vet suspects is from a dog bite. He has multiple wounds across his his entire body. Again, indicative of dog bites.''
