Local farmers claim CAP reform does nothing to help rural life

Leitrim was one of the few areas not to have any protest

A Longford farmer says calendar farming is just one example of what is not working when it comes to working out a sustainable future for the sector.

Mervyn Waters who runs a dairy and beef farm in Killashee is one of the hundreds of farmers who took time out of a busy day earlier to join in IFA organised rallies around the country.

The rallies were aimed at highlighting the significance of the sector to rural areas across the country and the need to get the best deal possible in the CAP negotiations next week.

Mervyn Waters says there needs to be a better understanding of agriculture at the official level when it comes to trying to do the best for the environment:

Meanwhile, farmers in Leitrim decided earlier this week that they would not be joining the nationwide rally event.

James Gallagher, a former chairman of the organisation in the county says farmers have very specific concerns about what needs to happen to keep the sector sustainable and disagree with some of what's being proposed...
