Excavations are underway in Leitrim this month in an effort to find material that may be able to prove the age of some 'sweathouse' structures in the county.

The Leitrim Sweathouse Project began last year when it was initiated by the heritage section of the council and supported by the Heritage Council of Ireland.

A total of 98 sweathouses sites were known to be in the county at the beginning of last year, and during the course of the project a further 12 were identified, some in very good condition.

The stone huts are thought to have been used for health and medical reasons but it hasn't been possible to find out precisely when they were in use.

Leitrim Heritage Officer Sarah Malone says they hope to be able to find out more this year…
