EPA urging local homeowners to fix septic tanks after high failure rate

Roscommon recorded the highest number of test failure inspections locally

56 percent of domestic septic tanks failed inspections last year across the Shannonside Northern Sound region.

A new report issued by the Environmental Protection Agency shows 65 inspections were conducted locally in 2020.

Roscommon tops the list for failed inspections last year with 85 percent of the 20 inspections completed resulting in failure.

In Leitrim, 59 percent of inspected tanks failed examination last year out of a total 17 inspections. Half of the 12 septic tanks inspected in Longford failed to meet EPA standards in 2020.

While Cavan recorded the lowest failure rate locally at 38 percent of their 16 inspections. Meanwhile, while 26 inspections were recorded as being needed in Monaghan, none were carried out in 2020 according to the figures.
