Uisce Éireann says it's especially important that mains drinking water is not given to bottle-fed infants.

A temporary 'Do not consume' notice has been issued for Athlone's public water supply. The notice was issued following consultation with the HSE and Uisce Éireann in partnership with Westmeath County Council. It's in place from 5 pm until 9 pm today following a technical fault at a treatment plant which led to elevated fluoride levels in the supply. Uisce Éireann cautioned customers that this is not a Boil Water Notice and water should not be consumed until after the notice expires. It said it's especially important that mains drinking water is not given to bottle-fed infants.

The notice will affect approximately 20,000 customers supplied by the Athlone Public Water Supply. Uisce Éireann says staff are working with colleagues in the local authority to resolve the situation as soon as possible. Customers who have concerns are asked to contact the customer care team on 1800 278 278.
