Detections of pesticides in local water supplies down on last year

Run off from lands treated with pesticides can seriously impact water quality and safety according to Irish Water.

Cases of pesticide detections in local drinking water supplies are falling according to Irish Water.

A new report from the utility shows incidents have fallen compared to last year.

Leitrim recorded just one incident in 2021, with the pesticide MCPA being detected in the South Leitrim Regional public drinking water supply.

This was a significant drop compared to 2020 where four exceedances of Glyphosate were monitored in the county.

Lough Forbes in Longford was also the location of an exceedence of pesticide with MCPA discovered in the water supply.

Roscommon reported no exceedences in 2021, with stakeholders along rivers and water ways urged to reduce their use of pesticides if possible.
