The Education Minister says the current relationships and sexuality curriculum in schools is 'outdated'.

The existing sex and relationships programme being taught in Irish schools is 'overly naive'.

That's according to a former Equality officer with Irish Second Level Students' Union and Longford man Eric Ehigie.

Pornography, consent and gender stereotyping will soon become part of the Junior Cycle curriculum under a proposed new project.

It follows a review conducted by the Department of Education which found it was 'heavily concerned' with aspects of Ireland's relationships and sexuality programme.

The revamped version of the subject will be required teaching in every school regardless of ethos.

Speaking to the Joe Finnegan Show, Eric Ehigie says we cannot be naive and ignore the fact that these issues are affecting teenagers now.

The Longford man says while a balance must be reached, it's vital the programme is updates:

We have to be mindful of how young many of these people are.

But at the same time we cant be over naive about what out young people are doing behind the backs of their parents.

Porn is something a lot of people turn to because they are not being taught at school or at home how to navigate these issues.

If in school, they were given the apparatus and tools to be able to approach theses issues in a more wise way.

If they do interact with porn or distorted pictures or videos on how to approach a relationship, they can do so with more wisdom.
