There has been a dip in the number of Covid-19 cases in recent days.

A senior health official in the Shannonside region believes the country is on the 'downward slope' of the fourth wave of Covid-19.

Tony Canavan told the latest meeting of the Western Health Forum this afternoon that the first phase of the vaccination programme will be complete by the end of this week.

The head of the Saolta Hospital Group, which operates facilities in Sligo, Ballinsloe and Roscommon, say the vaccination centre infrastructure will be retained to carry out the roll out of booster doses.

He admitted that there is a lack of certainty about the future, due to the nature of the pandemic, but preparation will be put in place to deal with future situations and confirmed staff associated with mass vaccination will also be retained, in order to deal with future requirements.
