Longford County Council is highlighting the environmental risks of burning rubbish.

The environmental officer with Longford Council is asking people to report stockpiles of rubbish over the weekend to the council, or gardaí if they suspect they're going to be used as bonfires.

Gary Brady says that apart from being illegal, bonfires and fireworks can cause real disruption and fear to both the older and younger members of our society.

He says the emergency services are on the lookout for potential stacks of tyres, timbers, or rubbish piles this weekend.

The Longford council officer says they'll take them away where they can, in an effort to minimise risk to people and property.
