The tower is one of the most iconic structures in all of Longford.

Longford County Council is currently trying to establish the title deed of the Ardagh Clock tower in an effort to safeguard its future.

The news came at a meeting of Ballymahon Municipal District recently during debate on a motion from Councillor Paul Ross asking that the council take ownership of the protected structure.

The Fine Gael councillor said a local committee has been trying in vain to draw down funds to restore the tower, but they can't do it because its ownership isn't established.

Director of Services John Mc Keon told members that the issue is in the hands of the council's heritage officer who's been trying to trace the legal channels.

Mr McKeon says that when the council can prove they have exhausted all legal avenues they will be able to apply for a "deed of rectification" for the structure.

Councillor Ross says he hopes the council's action will result in the monument being safeguarded for the future…
