The plan could see a new link developed across the Shannon if something similar is developed on the Longford side of the river

Roscommon County Council is seeking an expert to examine the possibility of developing a boardwalk at Lough Ree in Ballyleague.

The local authority is hoping to employ someone to prepare a feasibility study for the project which will form part of 'Just Transition plans' for the area.

The Council has recently published a public tender for the project which they claim will "create a stunning and quite unique access pathway to Lough Ree Bay, and shoreline."

The Council hopes the 1.5 to 2km boardwalk would run along local wetlands in the area and once constructed may connect to County Longford via similar boardwalk as yet unconstructed to create a new cross-Shannon link which would be accessible to pedestrians and cyclists.

The Council believes that tourism can help mitigate the loss of hundreds of Bord na Mona jobs in the area - with the deadline for interested parties to respond to the tender application the 14th of April next.
