The proposed development was subject to submissions from rival supermarket chain Tesco.

Plans have been approved by Roscommon County council for the demolition of the LIDL Foodstore in Carrick On Shannon and the construction of a new one.

LIDL Ireland had submitted plans calling for the construction of a new discount food store on the site of the previous facility following its demolition, including 124 car parking spaces, 2 dedicated electric vehicle charging points and cycling spaces.

The development will use the existing vehicle entrance for customers and a new entrance for service vehicles.

Also included in the plans are photovoltaic solar panels in the roof and an ESB substation building.

The development has been subject to submissions from representatives of Tesco Ireland, who claim the proposed single-use plans are an underdevelopment of the site which is classed as a 'Neighbourhood Centre'.
