Breast Check screenings must return to county Leitrim as a matter of urgency.

That's the call from the Cathaoirleach of Leitrim County Council Ita Reynolds Flynn at the September meeting of the local authority.

Currently, people hoping to avail of Breast Check service in Leitrim must attend a mobile unit based at Sligo University Hospital.

The distance involved in travelling and the waiting times facing patients following major delays in the service during the pandemic are putting people off according to Councillor Reynolds Flynn.

The Ballinamore Councillor called on BreastCheck and the HSE to locate a mobile screening unit in Carrick on Shannon in a motion supported by the entirety of her council colleagues.

Speaking at the meeting this week,  she also called for the screening age to be opened to those aged 40 and over.

"If we have to go to have a breast check which is now from age 50-70, you go to a mobile unit in Sligo and it's very unfair on people in Carrigallen; Cloone; Ballinamore; Drumshanbo, that we have travel all the way to Sligo. So it is a necessity to have a mobile unit cancer screening unit brought to all the major towns in Leitrim but at least to Carrick-on-Shannon presently."
