The cost of grave plots in cemeteries run by Longford County Council is set to increase substantially from next January.

The price of a single plot will increase from €250 to €400, a double plot rises from €500 to €800 euro, and a triple plot will cost €1600 from next year instead of the present €750.

Members of Longford County Council were also told at their recent monthly meeting that it's hoped to build a columbarium wall at Ballymacormack cemetery next year which will allow people to inter ashes there.

Local councillor Peggy Nolan says that while the increase in grave costs appears substantial, there hasn't been any rise for several years.

She says she's very happy the wall will be built for people who want that option, and that the costs increase has nothing to do with the wall being built…
