Things are not as bad as first feared according to a local conservationist.

Curlew numbers in north Roscommon and south Leitrim appear to be steady despite a recent report.

That's according to Brian Hughes who works with the Curlew Conservation Project in Mayo/Roscommon.

He says there had been bad news recently with the results of a survey last year showing just 104 pairs of native curlews nationwide, compared to 138 pairs recorded in 2017.

Brian says the only good news from the recent figures is that a decline hasn't actually been recorded in any of the nine areas countrywide where the Curlew Conservation Projects have been run since 2017.
