Mr. Pether's detention has been branded as illegal by the UN.

Serious concerns are being raised over the health of a Roscommon resident currently jailed in Iraq.

Robert Pether, who is an Australian citizen but lives in Elphin, was detained on April 7th last year before being found guilty of deception in an Iraqi court and sentenced to 5 years jail and a 12 million dollar fine.

The charge and resulting trial have been questioned by both the Australian and Irish Government.

Last year the United Nations declared Mr Pether's detention 'illegal' and called for his immediate release.

Robert's wife Desree lives in Elphin with his three children and has serious concerns about his health.

Pictures of Robert released to the Guardian Newspaper further strengthened those fears, with the Australian man's Doctor stating his health is clearly deteriorating.
