Longford County Council has seen close to €10,000 in court judgements issued to individuals for littering and dumping in the last year. The Environment Section of Longford County Council issued over 150 litter fines following offences that took place in 2023. Of these, failure to pay fines resulted in 26 prosecutions initiated under the Litter pollution act.

These include a court order of €2,500 plus costs for substantial waste dumped in the river at Kilnasavogue, €1.500 of a fine for waste dumped at Cloonturk and other fines related to incidents in Granard and Longford Town. Longford Environment Department is reminding people to support the battle against illegal dumping by taking action themselves if they see someone littering or if they come across dumped waste in their locality.
