Cavan priest fined €500 for celebrating mass

A priest in Co.Cavan has received a fine, understood to be 500 euro, for celebrating mass with people present.

Fr. P.J. Hughes in Mullahoran was given the fixed penalty notice after being reported to Gardaí. Under Level 5 restriction, places of worship are to remain closed except for private prayer.

Writing in this weekend's parish bulletin, Fr. Hughes said he doesn't accept the ban on services. He said he "will exercise his constitutional right even though people are complaining", which includes going against the advice of his bishop.
