The Shannonside counties of Leitrim, Roscommon and Longford are among nine counties in Ireland that do not have one of these facilities.

There are calls for a domestic violence refuge to be opened in Carrick-on-Shannon.

The Shannonside counties of Leitrim, Roscommon and Longford are among nine counties in Ireland that do not have one of these facilities.

Gardai received almost 60,000 emergency calls reporting domestic abuse last year - an average of more than one every 10 minutes.

Michael McManus, who is running in the local elections as an Independent, says Carrick needs a refuge.
