The scheme did not gather as much support as the Council had hoped.

Leitrim County Council has pulled a plan to continue a pilot pedestrianisation of Carrick-on-Shannon after fewer people than expected came into the town centre.

The pilot scheme was due to continue in August and September, but last month after a protest from some traders, it was agreed that it would be reviewed after four weeks.

Following a meeting between CE Lar Power and a traders representative this week, it was agreed that the pilot would be discontinued for the rest of this year.

The council claimed that due to pandemic restrictions, footfall was lower than anticipated to justify continuing the scheme.

However, it said the pilot demonstrated that the scheme could work, and pedestrianisation may be re-considered in the future.
