Over 50 members of the government have resigned in the last 48 hours

Boris Johnson's standing down as British Prime Minister.

He'll make a statement later, but it's understood he'll remain in post until the Conservative Party's elected his successor over the summer.

It follows the resignation of 50 members of his government in two days, and the release of a letter from his new chancellor telling him to 'go now'.

The mass rebellion began it was revealed Mr Johnson knew about allegations of inappropriate behaviour against MP Chris Pincher - before he promoted him to deputy chief whip.

Sky's political editor Beth Rigby says he finally had to accept defeat:

His own goals are the things that brought him down and in the end as hard as he may fight, if your government is collapsing, you cannot run a county.

If you cannot run a country, however much he may want, he cannot remain as prime minister
