The Bishop of Achonry is urging politicians to focus on improving the living conditions of mothers and children living in Direct Provision Centres as one way of paying tribute to those who suffered in the Mother and Baby homes..

Bishop Paul Dempsey says he joins with other Church leaders in apologising to all those who were treated in such an undignified and demeaning manner, and hopes that the means will be given to anyone who wants to try and find their true identity.

Bishop Dempsey says he has heard politicians speaking this week about how steps must be taken to change our culture and attitudes towards women and children.

He says he witnessed very poor conditions for women and children in a Direct Provision Centre in Kildare before becoming Bishop of Achonry, and he believes improving things for them now would be one way of paying tribute to the suffering of the mothers and babies in the past decades.
