The two women have been undergoing extensive training over the last 9 months in anticipation of the challenge.

Two women will attempt to swim from Lanesboro bridge to the Athlone town bridge as part of fundraising efforts for the RNLI today.

Serena Friel from Coosan and Karen Reynolds from Iona Park set off from Lanesboro bridge at 6' o clock this morning and hope to become the women to do the 32-kilometre swim.

The two women have been in training six times a week since the beginning of the year and will be attempting the swim without any buoyancy aids or special gear.

A new boat station for the RNLI in Athlone is being built at present and the women want to raise awareness of the vital service it provides for people across the region who go out on our waterways.

Anyone who wants to donate to the swim challenge can access it on gofundme.ie under the name The Lough Ree 32k Challenge.
