Maeve Kelly spoke in Brussels last week.

An Athlone woman who's been campaigning for years to have new laws introduced on access to driving licences says she has hope that something may happen soon at a European level.

Maeve Kelly from Coosan has been campaigning to have access to driving licences temporarily removed from people who have severe mental health issues after she and her daughter suffered significant injuries in 2016 in a collision in Co Roscommon.

The other car was being driven by a man suffering a psychotic episode and who turned off his lights and swerved across the road just before the crash.

She was invited to address a European Commission workshop in Brussels last week on the revision of driving licences and says the response was very positive and hugely encouraging.

''I got an email only a few days ago from Antonio venzo. He's the Executive Director of the European transport and safety council to say that they are in hope that this will come in and they hope to improve the driving licence system. In order to prevent collisions like mine. I'm quite happy at the minute the way things are going because in my own heart, I feel that if I can prevent this from happening to one individual and save one life, every life is precious.''
