Two groups of secondary school students from Athlone are hoping to raise 50-thousand euro so they can compete in a world final in Singapore.
The transition year students from Athlone Community College and Marist College are taking part in the World STEM Racing finals in October.
Marist's Stellar Racing team finished first in the national finals in Cork while the Community College's 'Apex Racing' finished third.
They are now representing Ireland in the competition which was formerly known as 'F1 in Schools'.
The competition involves developing a miniature racing car and all the marketing and organisation that goes with a racing team.
