The Mayor of Athlone is calling on the public to report any obvious stock-piling of material, including household waste, by youths for use in building bonfires for this weekend.

Cllr Aengus O’Rourke says while he appreciates that Hallowe’en will be not the same this year with no trick or treating, it is illegal to build and light a bonfire.

He also says that bonfires at this time of year has been used by some people to illegally dispose of waste material such as tyres which can be hazardous and when burned toxic, and dangerous to health.
